If you're always spilling something on your coffee table and you've ended up with a few unsightly stains, then you're in luck. Cleaning gurus have shared a tried-and-tested tip for removing those annoying spills after a social media user asked for help. Posting to Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips on Facebook - a public group where people swap their best tricks - an anonymous participant addressed the common problem.

"My friend left a tissue on coffee table and I think she had spilled vodka on it and now can't get this mark out of wood. Any advice greatly received," they wrote. The post was accompanied by a photo of their coffee table and the mark in question.

As most people will agree, it didn't look too pretty. Thankfully, commenters knew the trick. Several people shared advice, including one viewer who wrote: "I've removed stains like this by gently rubbing with a very slightly damp cloth dipped in wood ashes."

"I would try a magic eraser or gently use a scrubby. Good luck," added a second. Meanwhile, another advised: "Try a hair dryer it's moisture under the surface." In response, the post's author, who gave the advice a go, said: "You are amazing it worked in seconds thank you so much." "My pleasure I've had it happen often," replied the cleaning whizz.

Elsewhere, other cleaning gurus recommended using mayonnaise to tackle drink marks on wooden coffee tables. Simply add a small amount of mayonnaise to a microfibre cloth and then dab it directly onto the stain. Once the mayo has covered the offending marks, cover it up with a paper towel and let it soak in for a couple of hours. Check it afterwards, and if the stain has been removed, you should be able to wipe it away with ease. If not, repeat the process, but leave it overnight.
